Kimi Antonelli's Lucky Escape: Surviving the Piastri Collision and Securing P2 in Sao Paulo (2025)

A Lucky Escape: Kimi Antonelli's Fortunate Grand Prix Result in Sao Paulo

In a thrilling turn of events at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, rookie driver Kimi Antonelli found himself in a fortunate, yet controversial, situation. Despite being involved in a collision with Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc, Antonelli walked away with his best Grand Prix result to date - a remarkable second-place finish.

Antonelli's performance throughout the weekend at Interlagos was nothing short of impressive. Starting on the front row alongside race winner Lando Norris, he had a real shot at a podium finish. However, fate had other plans as he found himself in a three-way battle at Turn 1 during the Safety Car restart.

Piastri, with a better launch, attempted to overtake Antonelli on the inside, while Leclerc joined the fray on Antonelli's right. Unfortunately, Piastri's move went awry, locking up his wheels and causing a ricochet effect, sending Antonelli into Leclerc. The result? Leclerc's retirement and a 10-second penalty for Piastri.

"I had an aggressive restart, and my wheels spun, losing momentum towards Turn 1," Antonelli explained. "We were three abreast, and Oscar wasn't fully alongside on the braking. I was in a tricky spot with him on the inside and Charles on the outside. I tried to give space to both, but I didn't see the crash. I just knew Oscar locked up, and I got hit at the apex."

Despite the collision, Antonelli's car miraculously kept going, and he managed to secure a well-deserved second place. But here's where it gets controversial... Antonelli admits to feeling lucky, but was it enough to justify his position on the podium?

And this is the part most people miss: the race wasn't over for Antonelli. He faced intense pressure from Max Verstappen in the final laps, forcing him to defend his position aggressively. With fresher tires, Verstappen was a real threat, but Antonelli's skill and strategy prevailed, crossing the line just 0.362s ahead.

Reflecting on the battle, Antonelli said, "I didn't see Verstappen coming! The last lap was incredibly stressful. With free air, we maintained a decent pace and finished P2. I found my rhythm and pushed when he closed in. These cars are tricky in dirty air, so I used that to my advantage."

So, was Antonelli's result a testament to his skill, or did luck play a bigger role than we think? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss!
