Mr Men Little Miss Movie News: StudioCanal & Heyday Team Up (2025)

Bold statement: A beloved British children’s universe is poised to leap from page to screen, and the world is watching closely to see if it can capture the same magic at a new scale. But here’s where it gets controversial: can Mr. Men Little Miss translate its simple, single-trait charm into a blockbuster feature that appeals to both kids and grown-ups worldwide without losing its timeless whimsy?

Studios Canal and Heyday Films, who previously joined forces on the successful Paddington films, are teaming up again to develop a feature film based on the Mr. Men Little Miss property. The project aims to bring the iconic characters, created by Roger Hargreaves, to the big screen for the first time.

Mister Men Limited, a Sanrio Group company, has been brought on to help shape the film, with the goal of reaching audiences across generations and around the globe—just as the books have for more than five decades.

The Mr. Men and Little Miss books first appeared in 1971 (Mr. Men) and 1981 (Little Miss), and they have sold more than 250 million copies. The characters—each defined by a single defining trait—have become enduring cultural icons. Think of Mr. Happy’s boundless optimism, Miss Helpful’s earnest but chaotic good intentions, Mr. Tickle’s long arms that spark laughter, Mrs. Grumpy’s constant irritation, and Little Miss Naughty’s mischievous streak. In France, Mr. Men Little Miss is a top-selling children’s book series, and it remains one of the UK’s best-selling preschool brands.

Since Sanrio acquired the property in 2011, the Mr. Men Little Miss universe has expanded beyond books into fashion, health and beauty, toys, and more. Sanrio—also known for Hello Kitty—has broadened the cast to include more than 90 characters, including special editions inspired by cultural figures, with fanbases spanning the UK, France, Australia, and Asia.

The movie will build on an animated Mr. Men Little Miss series that’s available on YouTube and a second series in production for television.

Like Paddington, the goal is to blend humor, personality, and warmth with fresh storytelling to invite new audiences while honoring the charm that made the characters timeless.

Adam Hargreaves, son of the late Roger Hargreaves, commented on the news: “It’s amazing to think the Mr Men and Little Miss will have their own film. My father would have been thrilled, and I’m incredibly proud of his creation reaching the big screen. It’s a big step up for Mr Small.”

Heyday Films’ David Heyman, noted for his work on the Harry Potter series and Barbie, described the books as a globally beloved property that offers a bold and imaginative feature adaptation opportunity. He added enthusiasm about partnering with Studiocanal and Sanrio to explore a captivating new chapter in the evergreen world of Mr Men and Little Miss.

Anna Marsh, CEO of Studiocanal, expressed gratitude for the collaboration with Heyday and Sanrio, emphasizing the joy and adventure the project promises to theater audiences of all ages worldwide.

Tomokuni Tsuji, president and CEO of Sanrio, highlighted the franchise’s strength as a global ambassador of joy, with more than 90 characters that can expand into a wide-ranging entertainment IP platform.

Studiocanal and Heyday Films have a proven track record in premium family entertainment. Studiocanal has produced three Emmy-winning Paddington series, and Paddington has enjoyed three successful big-screen installments, all developed with Heyday. The latest film, Paddington in Peru, released in 2024, solidified the franchise as one of the most enduring independent family brands. A Paddington musical is currently previewing in London’s West End, produced through a special arrangement with Studiocanal. In addition, Studiocanal has revealed plans for a Paddington animated feature and a fourth film installment.

Executive oversight for the Mr Men Little Miss project will come from Ron Halpern, EVP of Global Production, and Joe Naftalin, SVP of Global Production and Head of UK Film Production, who will guide the project for Studiocanal.
