Philippine Airlines is set to transform its fleet with a series of upgrades, focusing on enhancing the business class experience. The airline's flagship Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 aircraft will receive new business class suites, mirroring the design set to debut on its upcoming Airbus A350-1000 fleet. This upgrade is part of a broader fleet modernization program, with the first A350-1000 expected to arrive in January, potentially delayed from December.
Philippine Airlines has ordered nine A350s, which will serve key destinations in the United States and Canada, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Toronto. The airline's President, Richard Nuttall, confirmed that the A350-1000 business class will feature a similar design to the one on the A350-1000. The refurbishment program for the A330s is estimated at $14-$15 million, with the Boeing 777s requiring a higher investment.
Additionally, Philippine Airlines is fitting its single-aisle Airbus A321 jets with new business and economy seats to enhance the passenger experience across the Asia-Pacific region. The A321ceo business class offers a 2-2 layout with a 45-inch pitch and a 10-inch recline, while the economy cabin has been reconfigured to provide more comfort, albeit with a slightly reduced seat count. The introduction of seatback video screens and USB charging outlets is a significant improvement for many passengers.
The A321s will undergo the transformation in three phases: three this year, nine in 2026, and the final six in 2027. These older A321ceo models will be upgraded to the A321neo series, which features lie-flat business class seats, although still in a 2-2 layout. This upgrade strategy aims to meet the growing demand for domestic and regional flights, with Cebu developing into a significant inter-island and international hub.
